As the weather cools down and fall arrives, many of us start spending more time indoors and preparing our homes and businesses for winter. However, with the change in seasons comes a unique set of fire hazards. At Fire Protection Specialists, we’re committed to keeping you safe year-round. Here are some essential fire safety tips for the fall season.

Heating Equipment Maintenance

With temperatures dropping, furnaces, space heaters, and wood stoves come back into use. Before turning them on for the season, ensure they are properly cleaned and serviced:

  • Furnaces should be inspected and cleaned by a professional.

  • Space heaters should be kept at least three feet away from any flammable materials and never left unattended.

  • Wood stoves and fireplaces need to be cleaned out and inspected for any buildup of creosote, a highly flammable byproduct of burning wood.

Chimney and Fireplace Safety

Nothing says fall like a cozy fire, but without proper maintenance, chimneys and fireplaces can pose serious risks:

  • Have your chimney inspected and cleaned to remove any blockages or creosote buildup.

  • Use a fireplace screen to prevent sparks from escaping.

  • Never leave a fire unattended, and always make sure it’s completely out before going to bed or leaving the house.

Be Mindful of Fall Decorations

Fall decorations, such as dried corn stalks, hay bales, and festive wreaths, can be highly flammable. Make sure they are:

  • Kept away from open flames like candles or fireplaces.

  • Not blocking any exits in case of an emergency.

  • Safe from sources of heat, such as lights and heaters.

Test Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Fall is the perfect time to test all your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. These devices should be tested monthly, with batteries replaced at least once a year:

  • Make sure all alarms are functioning correctly.

  • Consider installing interconnected smoke alarms, so when one goes off, they all sound the alarm.

Inspect Fire Extinguishers

This season is a great time to ensure your fire extinguishers are in good working order. For homes and businesses:

  • Check the expiration date and ensure it’s fully charged.

  • If you need assistance or mobile fire extinguisher recharging, our team at Fire Protection Specialists can help you stay prepared.

Clean Out Your Dryer Vents

With heavier fall clothing comes more lint in your dryer. Over time, this buildup can cause dryer fires:

  • Clean the lint filter after every load.

  • Check and clean the dryer vent regularly to prevent lint accumulation that could lead to a fire hazard.

Outdoor Fire Pit Safety

Fall is also a time for outdoor gatherings around fire pits. To stay safe:

  • Position fire pits at least 10 feet away from buildings, trees, or other flammable materials.

  • Never leave the fire unattended, and keep a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water nearby.

  • Extinguish the fire completely before leaving the area or going indoors.

Have an Escape Plan

In the event of a fire, having a clear escape plan can save lives:

  • Ensure everyone in your home or workplace knows the evacuation routes.

  • Practice your escape plan, especially if your space has multiple floors or exits.

  • Remember that seconds count during a fire emergency.
